Senpai + Kohai

This week's Fashion Friday Pic of the Week is from one of my new faves Senpai + Kohai....
For the Bali-chic girl, the bohemian glam... the urban rose.... they're pushing romanticism forward in a whole new modern direction.  Senpai + Kohai are ones to watch.

Johnny Football

I was impressed with Johnny Manziel's Heisman Trophy win,
but I'm much more impressed that as
And how cute is it that he was dressed
by his Uncle Harley of Harley's men's store in Texas?!

NEVER been a fan of the original Ugg Boots... have to say they look cute on the tiny foot of a tween paired with the obligatory denim mini... but for the grown, and sexy?  SMH, just can't see it.  Now the new direction/designs of Ugg?  These I can get into it.....

25 days and counting

I'm completely obsessed with the Jetson Bike! .... saw this fab form of transport on Oprah's #favoritethings a couple of weeks ago... not sure if I love it more in blushing pink or retro silver.

Originally $1,800, now $1,440 with code OPRAH
(expires Dec 31, 2012) |

"One charge of this sleek-looking electric bike's "green" battery provides 40 miles of easy riding, but you can also pedal—which recharges the battery, gets you some exercise, and keeps you away from the gas pump."—Oprah

Born to be a House Boy...

I was surprised to hear Tim Gunn say that too!  But if you are the type to have a House Boy (I think he would be the House Manager at my apartment LOL), Tim Gunn is the best of the best! I could "Make it work".  And who would have thunk it? Two Style Shepherd post with a Disney theme...right in a row!

I said I wasn't going to post about Holiday Shopping until after Thanksgiving.... but I've been shopping for Christmas since JULY..... while looking for the best baby gifts ever, I came across this site:  BECKLINA

Becklina is a "family business that tightly curates the strongest thinkers and artists in the fashion world today, emphasizing USA made, well crafted heirloom wares, with sustainable ideals".... and along with these absolutely adorable little wooden animals by David Weeks (that I hope Baby will be using to decorate his desk in his super cool dorm room one day #MommyFantasies), they also carry one of my absolute favorite designers as well... IVANAhelsinki.  Its like this shop was curated just for me!

Wrap it up!

Fall 2010 Couture Jean Paul Gaulthier
Whew!  I'm a busy woman and I have NOOOO time for my hair.  As it so happens, I have a LOT of hair... I'm not in the mood to cut it, and even a short cut with curly hair takes more time than I have. Soooo whatdaya do?  I thought about hats.  I have a very chic friend (Denise Fike) who's got a hat for every occasion.  I have a good hat head but a hat collection takes time.

And I'll get there one day but in the mean time, I'm wrapping it up! And the more drama involved, the more I like it... think Eryka Badu... Jean Paul Gaultier Fall 2010 Couture.

Here's a great video from Nanciella

Michael Kors

Michael Kors Fall 2012 RTW
I've always been a big fan of Thrift Stores, Flea Markets, and Antique Shops.... it's a little more difficult to do with Baby.  When he gets tired, it's a wrap.
Sidenote - Dream Vacation Day -London with Honey and Baby, they have tickets to a Man U football game and I have the day to stroll Portobello Road

Michael Kors Spring 2013 RTW

I'm sure that's what I get out of it, I LOVE the search.  It's all about digging for buried treasures.  Today, I struck gold!  I found a gorgeous pair of size 10 black Michael Kors pants for $6.95!  Yup, they almost fit, I have another 5 pounds of baby weight to lose (at least *wink*) and then they'll be perfect.  Got them into the cleaners right before they closed too!  Anyway, that got me to thinking, I hadn't seen Michael Kors Fall 2012 rtw or Michael Kors Spring 2013 rtw!  What in the .... really? I know!!! I've got to get it together!

On Michael Kors Fall 2012 RTW -- Loved the pieces individually, wasn't a huge fan of the styling, for a personal reason.  It kind of gave me a glamping feel... and I'm so not into camping, glamorous or otherwise. But the clothes themselves? Timeless lux.
On Michael Kors Spring 2013 RTW -- Classic Michael, I wasn't blown away, but I wasn't disappointed either.

Fashion Friday Look of the Week

....browsing through images from Tokyo Fashion Week,
I stumbled upon this bright collection... reminded me of
the crazy warehouse parties of the late 80's early 90's.  Didn't expect to find anything I could wear, but ahhhhhaaa, I would LOVE to wear this.  Styled differently of course, if you see my hair like this, it's probably a mistake, but I adore it for the runway.
... and I can't tell if these are pants or a skirt, anyone know?

Come See About Me

Had a long facebook conversation with a woman that I've been friends with for almost 20 years.  Unbelievable, I can't fathom that time span... 20 years?!  I can imagine 5 years, 2 years, but 20 years is a lifetime! So much has changed in our lives since we first met (we worked together, making and repairing wigs at The House of Gayer... I know, I can't believe that either) but so much about our friendship is exactly the same.

It was just the therapy I needed this morning as well.  Lots of things have changed and are changing in 2012.  2013 looks challenging, but I'm sooo going to just allow it to happen. Very zen about things this morning....

Speaking of wigs and things that stand the test of time....
How excited am I for this exhibit at the African American Museum in Philadelphia?!

from the African American Museum in Philadelphia's website:

PHILADELPHIA – (August 8, 2012) Nearly a half-century after American female singing group, the Supremes, conquered the airwaves and rose to international stardom, the African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP), in cooperation with Blair-Murrah Exhibitions, will celebrate the group’s historic imprint on American culture, women’s history, music, and fashion through a ground-breaking new exhibit. "Come See About Me: The Mary Wilson Supremes Collection" will feature over thirty of the Supremes’ most glamorous gowns.

“Come See About Me: The Mary Wilson Supremes Collection" is a showcase conceived by Mary Wilson, an original member of the Supremes. In addition to the group’s stunning gowns, “Come See About Me” will feature rarely seen video footage, gold records and album covers, historic photographs, and contemporary magazine and news articles. Wilson’s determined journey towards self-actualization—a story of universal relevance for women of all ages and backgrounds—will be a key theme of the presentation as well.

AAMP President and CEO Romona Riscoe Benson states, “The Supremes' legacy changed the face of music and we are thrilled to host Mary Wilson’s exhibit, including the many costumes she has preserved over the years. The Supremes and their music are a significant part of American history and we are proud to partner with PNC to present it to Philadelphia’s residents and visitors. We look forward to offering a wide variety of special events, educational programs and fun-filled activities relating to the exhibit that everyone will enjoy.”

Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, noted expert in popular culture including music, and professor of Black Popular Culture in the Department of African and African American Studies at Duke University, has been engaged as the guest curator for the exhibit. Dr. Neal, author of five books, is a frequent commentator for National Public Radio and contributes to a number of online media outlets, among them Huffington Post Black Voices, and

“The gowns tell the story of an important era: the Supremes and the society that the Supremes helped to transform. The Supremes embodied style, class and integrity at a time when those were some of the only things that African-Americans could legitimately claim in American society. The grace and confidence that the Supremes personified would inspire a nation and continue to serve as a shining example of modern Black womanhood—American womanhood,” says Dr. Neal.

"Come See About Me: The Mary Wilson Supremes Legacy Collection" was made possible by a PNC Arts Alive grant. This is a very prestigious grant award. In 2012, only twenty-five arts organizations in the Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey region were selected for bold thinking around increasing arts access and engagement and AAMP was one.
“The PNC Foundation has a long history of providing grants to non-profit organizations that strengthen and enrich the lives of our neighbors,” said Bill Mills, regional president of PNC for Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. “We understand the valuable return that investing in the arts can deliver. Today more than ever, the businesses we attract, the jobs we create and the visitors who extend their stay are drawn by what the Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey region has to offer.”
The exhibit will be supported by extensive programming including concerts, celebrity appearances, fashion shows, and various other specialized activities. AAMP and PNC will make an official media announcement on October 10, 2012. For more information about the “Come See About Me” exhibit, please visit

You know those days when you wake up before the alarm, and you just watch the minutes tick by until you HAVE to get up?  Tuesday, October 2nd was one of those days.  And I had a thousand and one things to do, so it was also a day that I had to hit the ground in full stride... and make-up. But there was one shining light at the end of my work day, I was going to see Fractionable at Moore

Moore has an annual Jumpstart Fashion Show, and it's always the first show of each new school year.  So, that means their design students are given this assignment the first day of class! Imagine the pressure. Add to that a mathematical theme and we're well into the panic attack zone.

The students were instructed to create a design based on the Golden Ratio, symbolized by the Greek letter "phi".  Mmm hmm... take a piece of muslin (Oh yeah, the other kicker is everything had to be made out of muslin) and create something that screams natural symmetry, screams influence of math on design.... Project Runway, ain't got nothin' on this challenge.

The cutest little animation started the show (starring Donald Duck no less) to explain the Golden Ratio.  Thank God, I haven't thought about phi since .... high school (?).

The audience still had smiles on their faces from the animation, when the first model stomped out.  Nice transition, from sweet Donald Duck to Pow Six foot Glamazon.  I've been to many many many fashion shows, and I expect to be wowed maybe twice at a student show, but this show, this show wowed me over and over again.  This is a really talented class of Juniors and Seniors.

Design Philadelphia

I was able to squeeze out a little time
to see some of Design Philadelphia last night....

Look at the baubles created by Allison Hunt and Denise Fike!

Denise Fike's nature inspired statement rings!  These ladies stand at least three inches high!

Sewwww Good!

After some interesting life changes and working on a fun project with a stylist for Vogue and Butterick Patterns (more on that later)... I've dusted off the old Singer Sewing Machine and started to sew again.
Vogue Pattern V1181 Chado Ralph Rucci

... I mean how many fabrics could you see this gorgeous Chado Ralph Rucci caftan in.  It would be amazing in black silk for hosting a small dinner party (I'd accessorize it with a really long chunky necklace and a seriously dramatic turban) ...... or how lovely would this be in some gorgeous transparent print for a stroll on the beach.

Louis Vuitton -- Spring 2013

Pic Credit -
I'm not into labels and logos plastered across the human form as a 'style'......
I mean, I get it as far as branding've got to keep your name out there after all.

Having laid out that little disclaimer, please watch Marc Jacob's genius Spring 2013 Louis Vuitton Fashion Show.  He turns those little Louis V. blocks into... art!  This runway is an art installation.

Jump Start at Moore!

Oh I can't wait to show you all the designs from last night's Jump Start Fashion Show at Moore.... you always expect to see one or two really great looks at a student fashion show, but one after the other, the models stomped out in really impressive and sophisticated designs.  Bravo Moore! Bravo!

Stay tuned, more pics and designer info coming very soon

One of my favorite looks from last night's show

Busy Baker!

Took a stroll through The Woodlands last Sunday, for their 2nd Annual Go West Craft Fest, and as usual Philadelphia Craftsmen brought out their best and brightest, and I wanted to buy EVERYthing.... but I was especially into the baubles and bowties in the Busy Baker Industries Booth.

I love most things that have a vintage/repurposed twist to it.  And Kaysee Baker, owner/designer at Busy Baker Industries has a really great aesthetic.

It's vintage inspired, and still fun and young.  She's one to watch.

FAO Schwarz, 150 years

The NYC toy store FAO Schwarz is celebrating 150 years!  150 years! Can you imagine?

We'll be taking what we hope to be an annual Christmas trip to FAO Schwarz in a couple of months.... I'm so excited! I can't wait to see our Baby's face light up at all the Holiday magic.... created by a very creative I'm sure, FAO Schwarz design team.
Can't wait to see...

Tonner Dolls

From the FAO Schwarz facebook page - In an ongoing partnership with Disney, Tonner’s Alice in Wonderland Collection is a tribute to the incredibly imaginative version of the childhood favorite story by filmmaker/director Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp.

Faking It

First Major Exhibition Devoted to History of Manipulated Photography Before Digital Age Opens at Metropolitan Museum October 11 —January 27, 2013

From - Exhibition Location: Galleries for Drawings, Prints, and Photographs and The Howard Gilman Gallery
While digital photography and image-editing software have brought about an increased awareness of the degree to which camera images can be manipulated, the practice of doctoring photographs has existed since the medium was invented. Faking It: Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop at The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the first major exhibition devoted to the history of manipulated photography before the digital age. Featuring some 200 visually captivating photographs created between the 1840s and 1990s in the service of art, politics, news, entertainment, and commerce, the exhibition offers a provocative new perspective on the history of photography as it traces the medium’s complex and changing relationship to visual truth.

Ryo Takemasa

image from Ryo Takemasa
I can't tell you how many times I've lived this scene.
And this illustration by Ryo Takemasa pushed me right into those memories.  The two strongest ones are:

  1. running late for the IVANAhelsinki fashion show and the NYC Subway was flooded at Penn Station, so EVERYONE was out in the rain, in line for a taxi.
  2. Getting off the train at 30th street station in Philadelphia after setting up a trade show booth at the Javitz Center in NY, and the snow had turned to cold rain.... Those cabs lined up, were a sight for sore eyes
*notice how in NYC, I call them taxis and in Philly I call them cabs.  LOL *

Jump Start!!!

Fractionable is this year's theme
for Moore College of Art & Design's Jumpstart Fashion Show. The annual Project Runway-style event will take place Tuesday, October 2, 6 pm in The Great Hall.

Traditionally the first fashion show of the new school year at Moore, junior and senior fashion design students will have just one month to devise, design and showcase a garment based on the theme. "Fractionable" challenges fashion designers to create a garment that applies the rules of mathematics and the golden raio or golden rule searching for stylish symmetry in nature as they compete on the runway. Select student designs will be featured on view in The Galleries at Moore later this fall.

It's always a wonderfully creative event...
Hope to see you there!

Last year's winner for Best Historical Inspiration

Jumpstart is free and open to the public. Seating is limited.

Clothing donations for Career Wardrobe will be collected at the event

Career Wardrobe accepts donations of new and gently used women's professional clothing and accessories (shoes, scarves, jewelry). Beauty products, hosiery and toiletry donations must be new and unopened.

I love you Oscar!

Oh mercy!  I love love love love love
 .... that's 5 loves in a row!
Yes, I love it that much!
Oscar de la Renta Spring 2013, look # 47!
pic from

How I'd like to recreate this look on my budget:
I'll probably change the stripes to all vertical, especially if the 20 stone I want to lose by Spring 2013 are still hanging around, and I may have trouble recreating the almost chevron look for the skirt (any suggestions?)

I'll have to string some black silk flowers (from Etsy most likely) to mimic that gorgeous black rose necklace and cuff.
These are from Etsy shop blossomheads

And I'll have to hunt down the perfect black and white striped fabric with much smaller stripes...these stripes read very bold and "evening", my look has to be wearable during the day and have a strap.  Popping my toddler on my hip in a strapless dress is a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.... and probably cotton or some kind of blend (must be able to wash it!).  I like this pattern from kwik sew (the A Version).... easy enough to add length to make it a maxi.

Hippie Glam!

Couldn't let another day go by without sharing how much I loved Leslie Mann's look on yesterday's Emmy red carpet.

Image from Lisa's Fashion Blog
The dress is Naeem Khan... comfortable and elegant.  A full skirt with deep pockets, a crocheted bodice that mimics lace...and natural turquoise jewelry.  This is a look I would copy for spring.

How I would copy it....

This McCall's skirt pattern (M5591) adding a longer length and higher waist.

And this Butterick top pattern (B5948) in a  large simple lace fabric.
