Gray Matter

Bouvier Jewelry
So, I'm going through my closets... and even though we saw 15" of snow last week, and a promise of more to come.... I'm confident that spring is on its way, and I need to be prepared. So committed to adding more color to my wardrobe this season and I'm leaning towards grass green and maybe accents of red.  Love the way grass green and cherry will pop against all of the gray I already own.  And I can't just chuck it all, that would be financially irresponsible, (or I may be holding on to the black/beige/gray neutrals *shrug*). Still.... Is there anything as beautiful as gray pearls?

Oh divine intervention.... guess what is on Turner Classic Movies?  Doctor Zhivago!  A virtual study in the many shades of gray, brown.....  and snow! Oh, but I do love the Tonya's coat in this scene.  Of course I would choose a fabulous faux fur.

Oh next time this week, I'll be on my way home, absolutely giddy about seeing the Balenciaga exhibit, at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute.  Can't wait!  ... of course there will be pictures for you!

Fashion Friday, Elie Saab Spring 2011 Couture
I am mad for this sleeve!

Fashion Friday, Indie Designer - Beth Levin

Jewelry designer Beth Levin's work makes me nostalgic for the, bright Art Deco inspired jewelry of the 70s.....  when we loved disco ball sparkle and the sentiment of hippie peace and love.

I collect vintage soda and beer bottle caps and fill them with found objects. The tiny treasures are then embedded under resin along with your choice of cork, sand or colored glass & metal beads to create my JewelRe-caps™. I like to think of my JewelRe-caps™ as jewel-like mini works of art using recycled materials as my canvas.         ~ Beth Levin

Beth has a wonderful online shop called FROM JUNK 2 FUNK, but if you're in Philadelphia you can pick up one of her gorgeous little baubles from the Art Shop at Moore!  Happy Shopping!

Slice of Life 1/27/2011

Ugh! 15" of snow and my favorite Bodega is closed!
My mouth was watering for some Teddy Grahams.
But, the snow does make everything magical, doesn't it?

Wait a minute, Mr. Post Man...

I'm currently obsessed with....

This blog is about "Everything under the sun from Helmut Newton to Woody Allen to Cristobal Balenciaga to Keith Haring and back around again".

This is my kind of blogger, with post about...

And the Mauve Diary is currently obsessed with "this image of Christy Turlington in a vintage Revlon Red ad from the late 80s. She exudes the glamour of a Patrick Nagel illustration and a Robert Palmer video girl rolled into one".  Wow!  She does look like a Nagel/Palmer video girl collaboration!
Thanks Mauve Diary! Keep writing! We're reading!

Gangs of New York - US Vogue Feb. 2011

My heart leapt when I opened my post office box...
My February Issue of American Vogue!
Rodarte Spring Summer 2011, Photographed by Mario Testino
Ripping the plastic off a new issue of Vogue each month is my little slice of Christmas.

I always, always, always... always always always, open it before I leave the post office.  It's extremely annoying to the people around me, because I become completely absorbed.  I don't recommend it.

Well this time when I took a peek inside, the Gangs of New York editorial spread, stopped me in my tracks.  A little bit of fantasy, a whole lot of wearability.... so Vogue!

Lorraine Hansberry, who was potgraphed for Vogue in 1959 after the smashing success of a Raisin in the Sun

After flipping back a few sections, I see that this months Nostalgia article is about Lorraine Hansberry!  I can't wait to stack the pillows up and cuddle into this one!

Fashion Friday - Junya Watanabe

Junya Watanabe Fall 2008

One of my absolute favorite collections is Junya Watanabe Fall 2008.  I go back to it time and time again.... I apologize for this blasphemous statement, but I must admit, while deciding what to buy or wear.. I have had the thought, WWJ(unya)D.  *shrug* Jesus understands... we go way back.  Anyway... if Junya Watanabe were sold on Etsy, I would buy this suit!

Speaking of Etsy... the winner of the Steel Giveaway is WindyCity!  In her winning entry she suggested we take a peek at this Bird Nest Shawl by
N By haNNa
Well! I just faved this shop!

And I think I must have this N By haNNa riding hood as well!
Thank you Windy City and Congratulations!

I've been looking back at my favorite collections for Spring/Summer 2011 .... because the weather in Philadelphia is either white or gray.  Two neutrals that I'm mad about, but just for one season.  I'm dying for some sun.

So Dsquared2 Women's Spring/Summer2011  is one of my favorite collections because I LOVE a menswear inspired look.   Being a curvy woman, it gives me the structure I need ..... and I can pull it off because it really is  just 'inspired' by menswear.  My curves keep it from being to androgynous.  If I have to be critical of anything, it's that I can't imagine the cut of the pants being flattering on anyone with hips.  So as much as I was loving one fabulously straw chapeau-ed model appear on the runway (crazy about the accessories), I wasn't seeing this as a collection that everyone would be clamoring for. And then, at about 5 minutes and 10 seconds in, out comes a cape cut to resemble your lover's jacket thrown over your shoulders on a chilly night... and all was forgiven. We'll leave the pants to the model bodies, but all of us will wear the capes.  Gorgeous!

Red Carpet!!!!! Love the Golden Globes!

Whew! I'm exhausted... gotta say I LOVE watching the red carpet broadcast with my facebook friends... I've never typed so fast in my life!  Whew! ... wiping my brow.

So,  there was lots and lots of Emerald!  What does that mean?
Angelina Jolie in Versace  LA Times

--The emerald is the sacred stone of the goddess Venus. It was thought to preserve love. The emerald has long been the symbol of hope. It is considered by many to be the stone of prophecy.--
~ Emily Gems
*Shrug* You figure it out!  I love love love it as a stone, but it's a little somber in the bright sunshine of Hollywood, No?
And lots of blonds (it is Hollywood after all) in one shade of pale pale peach, pale pale biege, ... the palest of neutrals, and they all looked washed out.  What are they thinking?  Is it something that I just don't get.  Explain it to me, I'm willing to learn.  (My opinion hasn't changed from my post in 2009 about the Golden Globes....  Maybe I don't like pale?)

But there was one blond who is tied for The Style Shepherd's Best Dressed! January Jones! She's a star!
January Jones in Versace - Fab Sugar
And I have to give it up to the woman who clearly comes to this costume party dressed as herself!  Helena Bonham Carter in Vivienne Westwood!
Helena Bonham Carter in Vivian Westwood - Mirror Mirror
.... and in a tie for Best Dressed is Eva Longoria!  If you can be chic and a bombshell, this is the way to do it.
Eva Longoria in Zac Posen - Mirror Mirror
Love a Red Carpet!  Don't you?!

I want to share some of the funnier quotes from my own personal facebook fashion experts.... Disclaimer:  All of these comments come from a place of love, we really love all the Red Carpet-ees, we just have a funny way of showing it.

Tijuana - She looks like Sharon Stones character from Casino. lol
Nicole - Draped column looks like the black swan is going to tango
Nikka - Holy 80s flash back, Batman!

....... 'Til next time!

Visions of Chocolate!

I was able to have a very relaxing hour this morning with peppermint tea and chocolate kisses, a very interesting bio-business program about Google on Bloomberg TV, and during the commercials I thumbed through my January Issue of In Style Magazine. Yes, I said peppermint tea and chocolate kisses in the morning! It's Saturday. *Shrug* Who's gonna know? I have a certain gluttonous way of eating kisses too. I grab a bunch peel the silver paper and then eat them in bunches... don't ask what a bunch is, it will disgust you, let's just say a bunch is more than one. I LOVE chocolate! Was that TMI? We're long time friends though, you don't mind. Anyway, my point is... I was inspired by a kiss. I've been thinking about adding more color to my very gray and black wardrobe (See this week's Steel post), and I will! But... maybe Chocolate can be my new staple color. Chocolate is my new Black!
