Good bye 2010! Hello 2011!

I always say that I'm not going to share my New Year's Resolution(s).... It puts to much pressure on me.  On January 12th, 2011, when I take a big bite of that chocolate chip cookie, I don't want ten people to jump out of the woodwork, and snap a photo of me with their cell phone.... Clutch the pearls! You know they will post it on facebook, with the caption... she made it 12 whole days! Oh no ma'am, that is so not cute. So... any dietary, fitness goals I have for the rest of my life are between me and Allegra Feamster... check out The Body Beautiful, by Allegra.

So... what resolutions will I share?

- I am going to actively fill my world with beautiful books, with museum exhibits,  lots of fashion, art, and music.... and share it all with you.

 - The question I'll ask myself in the mirror is one I learned from Sarah Seidelman ... "How FABULOUS are you willing to let your life get?"

- ..... and meditate, and meditate, and meditate!

-You know that old adage 'Pay yourself first'... I'm going to put a little twist on that, and 'Buy myself first'.  Each month, I'm going to buy some special little something just for moi!

Happy New Year!

Yohji!

I'm getting ready to go out and fight the slushy streets of Philadelphia, in my long wool gray coat and a super long gray infinity scarf (crochet by yours truly), but ....

I'd rather be swathed in this Yohji Yamamoto coat.... Love the vintage silhouette!

Strange Fruit

I'm always looking for fashion that is versatile, and .... chic (An overused adjective, I know... but at the end of the day, if you're described as 'chic', you've got to be happy with that.) So... when I spied this gorgeous shirt dress by Strange Fruit.... I died!  Guess what?! Both sides can be front or the back.... Versatility! I want to wear this with some gorgeous chunky jewelry (... becoming my signature, I think) and a great pair of shoes for 'out' and with a jacket and flats for 'everyday'.  Fab!

Stay With Me Baby!

Just had a long conversation with a very fashionable friend (who wants to remain nameless... why? I don't know. *shrug*) about what makes a Fashion Icon. I say, it's anyone you can recognize by their silhouette or seeing their clothes hanging in the closet.  I would know, Diana Ross's clothes... I would know Karl Lagerfeld's clothes... I would know Betsy Johnson's silhouette .... wouldn't you know Isabella Blow's collection of chapeaus?

...... anyway, we went on and on about who is recognizable and who isn't?  I say Janis Joplin's closet and silhouette are recognizable, my friend says not so much,..... that she is a music icon.. and her closet could belong to any flower child.  WHATEVAH!  LOL

Speaking of the great Janis Joplin, I haven't heard this cover of Lorraine Ellison's 'Stay With Me Baby' in forever.
LOVE this version!

Philadelphia Designer's Market!

If you haven't "Liked" Philadelphia Designer's Market on Facebook or subscribed to their newsletter, you should do so ASAP.

You know I love all the big designers, but I REALLY love an Indie-Designer! So when I saw this invite.... I typed it into my calendar immediately and have been looking forward to it for weeks! ......should have posted a reminder for everyone else on the 17th... I promise, I'll make sure I post their Spring Market dates.

So... I was really in the mood for fashion, the night before I attended John Wind/Maximal Art's 25th Anniversary Bash at The Palm
Best Dressed
Ilene Griff (Graphic Designer)
in Isabel Marant and Stella McCartney, John Wind Signature Necklace
Dina Wind (Artist, and Mother of John Wind)
in two classic John Wind Double brooch

..... after a whirlwind night of every neck, ear, and wrist being adorned with a John Wind bauble, I was prepped for more fashion and couldn't wait to see what the Philadelphia's Designer's Market had to offer.  And I wasn't disappointed ... I could hear the bustling shoppers and oohs and ahhs way before I started walking on the Market's yellow carpet (which was held at the Beautiful First Babtist Church on 17th Street.... took a moment to meditate inside the actual chapel... I highly recommend meditation, and I highly recommend a look at the beautiful architecture and history of the Church.

So... let's dive in!  There was an amazing energy inside the Market space.  Everyone was reaching and grabbing and trying things on.... and primping in mirrors... my kind of party.  Here are a few of my faves....

Designer, Kelly Louise succeeds in designing jewelry that allows the wearer to become one with the elements.  She wants to show the balance and connection between all things.
...Fell in love with her pocketwatches!

Ohhhh and I ran into one of my new favorite designers Sultana Maria (met her at Eat your Art Out).
Sultana Maria Jewelry makes the kind of jewelry that I'm so attracted to.... found objects, abstract, asymmetrical... Rocker Glam!  I bought a great pair of coin earrings... $20!
I Heart New Jersey

Nesha Griffin is self taught and has a line called My Rever Jewelry Collection (site under construction) her inspiration is nature.... You can see more of Nesha's work, on An Dukes blog.  Bought a beautiful silver multi-chain necklace.... $35!  Yes! I bet you'll be shopping the Spring Philadelphia Designer's Market. *Wink*

Afro-Chic

Tamara Dobson - Cover of Life Magazine 1969
So... yesterday I had time to read my fashion books, and fashion mags, ..... before the onslaught of the NFL games began.  I love Autumn/Winter Sundays!

A perfect Sunday for me is getting up early to meditate (usually, I can go for a long time because my Honey likes to sleep in). Then, I get on the couch with a huge cup of peppermint tea, a stack of fashion magazines, newspaper articles that I saved during the week, and a new Fashion or Art 'Coffee Table Book' to peruse.  That would be good enough, but by mid-morning, my Honey is up and we're getting hungry, ... time to drive over to Philadelphia's China Town neighborhood for Dim Sum.  Mmmmmm.... and then it's an afternoon filled with the NFL. Perfection!

*side-note - Part of my New Year's Resolution is to fill my world with beautiful books, with museum exhibits, fashion, art, and literature (more on that in a later post).

Okayyy.... I got off track there.  Ummm... right, so I was reading an article about Tom Ford in American Vogue (by the way, Tom Ford took the lead in French Vogue's December Issue.. must pick that up the next time I'm in the University of Penn bookstore) ....

...and I saw this amazing picture!

Love all the looks but the second woman from the left (luxurious afro, shredded silk-organza shrug, and  silk wrap dress.... as if you could miss her) made me nostalgic for the early 70s.  My Mother wore her hair in a big natural afro in the years before I was born (1971). And long enough after I was born, that I vividly remember watching her pat her afro perfectly round. There's a great picture of my parents, at their wedding reception with matching jumbo afros, my father in a navy jumpsuit and my mother in a magenta silk wrap dress. I love that picture! Wish I had it to share with you.  That fashion era, of Disco, Halston, Yves Saint Laurent's 'Le smoking', and Iman Glam is one of my absolute favorite fashion periods.

I was so inspired by the picture and feeling so nostalgic for those yesteryears that after all the games were over (Go Eagles!)... I began playing with my own hair, .... really need something easy and chic to do.  I can design and make jewelry, I can design and make clothing... not as adept when it comes to doing my hair.  ..... but you know what?  I can pick my hair into a nice Afro!  Definitely going to take this picture with me to my stylist, maybe she can teach me some tricks.  We'll see.

Of course, I sent this cell phone pic out to all my Sistahs.  Thanks Pam, Laketa, Ebony and Kris!  You are wonderful!

.... I'm so lucky to have friends that will text me back (at 12:45 am Monday morning!) to talk hair.

To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.  ~e.e. cummings, 1955

Some weeks ago I wrote a Fashion Friday Profile of the Week where I was introduced to the work of Andy Drew.  Thank you, Kisha Malika

Ya know that feeling that pulls a slow smile onto your face, and straightens your back? .....Attraction? That's how I felt when I saw his designs.... a mix of Edwardian tailoring, tribal chic, and the flair of the Harlem Renaissance.

Ladies and Gentlemen.... Andy Drew 2.

Save the Date!

Tis the season for gifts and giving, and a mailbox full of holiday cards. Tucked in with your stacks of season's greetings are the very creative, 'Save the Date' cards. Another one of your friends/family is going to jump the broom in June. And then the emails tagged urgent begin...

Do you know a good make up artist? I still want to look like me...
Who did Lisa use for her flowers last year?
Are you offended when there is no Vegetarian option? (No)
I can't sit them that close to each other.... would you mind sitting there?
.... and on and on and on.

So.... I've decided to pull together some links ... and blog!

Are you a bride who wants to put a twist on tradition? You must see...

www.theindiebride.com

Well Wed Magazine caters to the Vermont, New York, Hamptons, and Martha's Vineyard Bride.  My favorite is Well Wed New York, .... it just fits my taste.  I love their Bouquet Inspiration Galleries. ....useful for the flowers on your desk too!

Aisle Dash's 'What you should expect to pay for' cleared up an awkward conversation between a very irritated Bride and a overly budget conscious Bridesmaid.

.... but, the ultimate guide to all things wedding is the fun and practical book, 'The Bride's Instruction Manual: How to Survive and Possibly Even Enjoy the Biggest Day of Your Life' by Carrie Denny! Carrie is a noted wedding expert and the Fashion Editor at Philadelphia Magazine.... and editor of Philadelphia Magazine's twice yearly bridal publication.  This manual is described as 'covering every topic you need to know to march down the aisle with confidence, from setting the date and choosing The Dress to creating your guest list'.  A perfect gift for any bride-to-be.
