Mrs. Smith goes to Milan

Listening to the sweet tweets of WWD this morning....
womensweardaily Celebrity Fashion: Jada Pinkett Smith and her daughter Willow were fashion’s dynamic duo during Milan Fashion Week: http://bit.ly/bIrpij

A very chic Mother and Daughter, doing the rounds in Milan.  How adorable is Willow in animal print, exaggerated shoulder and sneakers to match?  About as cool as her mother, in shorts and over sized chunky accessories.

BROOKLYNrehab

BROOKLYNrehab is Alyssa Zygmunt. She's a fashion designer by day, collector and crafter by night. Each little handmade, vintage, and up-cycled piece is divine.  Not only does this shop sell the most precious little things, but the merchandising, makes me want to change everything in my apartment.

I'm getting rid of my silver bookends (from Staples) and getting this 'Scout's Honor' handcast porcelain bust to grace my shelves.

Salt is the spoon and pepper is the fork but don't worry if you forget,
there is always the "S" and "P" on top to remind you.

Grey Gardens Charm Necklace - You don't have to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth to love the absurd glamour of Grey Gardens and high society life in the days of yore. Sport your own spoon that comes shipped with a reproduced "coming out" card that was used by families to find suitors.

Wooden Key Necklace - Love the way this key necklace is displayed, I'm going to have to do some serious flea marketing to reconstruct this look at home.... and then where to put it?
Wish I had a mantle place..... I'll figure something out.

Everyone reaches out to touch my own Little Key Necklace from BROOKLYNrehab, so chic alone and light enough to cluster in with some other gorgeous little bauble.

Judith Leiber Exhibit - The Galleries at Moore

The Galleries at Moore are a gem!

I was really excited, when I heard that Moore was hosting a Judith Leiber exhibit! Luckily, I was able to take an afternoon off and scurry down to the Parkway.

The exhibit of 25 minaudieres, parade down a beautifully lit corridor.....  like the breadcrumbs left by Hansel and Gretel.  I hungrily peered into each display, each one more beautiful than the last.

If I had to choose, these are my favorites.
  Ommmmmm!

You must see this exhibit, get thee to 20th and the Parkway and partake!

Electric Florals for Spring 2011

.... Ahhh I was up at the crack of dawn this morning, with a cup of tea and my mountain of reading to catch up on......  local news, CNN Style and Design, Style.com, Bryanboy, .... my calendar! This morning I didn't get to any of those things (No worries, I'll get to it, probably while I watch ANTM tonight). I got so caught up in the Breaking Trends section of Accessories Magazine's News Flash

"London might be known for its showers, but boy did their designers bring on the runway flowers! London designers across the board showed us that floral prints are still a strong motif for Spring '11. Check out a few of these Asian-inspired floral prints from Christopher Kane's collection, and the sweet embroidery from Erdem." - Accessories News Flash

Christopher Kane
- mixed the electric colors in a Koi pond
with lace and lace print, arglye and polka dots!

  Erdem

A flicker of fresh type breaks the moment - RSVP Update Notification. Thank you for confirming your RSVP to IVANAHELSINKI. The King Collective invites you
to attend the presentation of the Spring 2011 Collection -
WHERE THE F*CK IS MY SAILOR
Well now, we can all relate to that? Who hasn't asked, where the f*ck is my sailor at one time or another? No? Just me?  I don't believe you... you're being shy. Wink.

Night of the show, Mother Nature flexes her muscles, shuts the Long Island Railroad down, and causes signal problems for Amtrack..... EVERYBODY is hunting a taxi!  Took me 20 minutes, but I'm finally splashing down 8th Avenue towards Lincoln Center!

Front row, right next to Zelda Kaplan!  All those sacrifices to the fashion Gods were worth it, this is going to be fun!

The lights dim..... an overwhelming recording of seagulls creates an anticipation I can't really explain... a little like Tippi Hedren in The Birds. In hindsight, .... more like the sounds you'd hear if you were stranded on a deserted island in the Pacific... looking for your missing sailor.  The first look rounds the corner, and the model marches slow and deliberate in a rope printed pleated dress, and red rope necklace.

Designer Paola Suhonen has set the mood.

And this IS a new take on the nautical theme. The reoccurring rope print is intriguing because up close, its so literal. At a distance, it's an optical illusion creating flattering movement and 'waves' in the fabric.

Most of the silhouettes were very girly, almost baby doll, and the rope/knot accents and accessories gave the baby doll a little delinquent twist. There was another fantastic reappearing print that looked like a mish mosh of classic sailor tattoos.  The kind of ink you would get, if you were a sailor in the 50's and had a reputation that the girls happily whispered about. It was a wonderful mix of mermaids, anchors, ships and seagulls..... perfectly modern, and perfectly vintage.

The accessories! Ropes, knots, and more ropes and knots.  Thick twisted rope headbands, nautical knot necklaces, mesh hats, crocheted sleeves and..... twisted rope boots!

Art as Fashion, Fashion as Art

I come across a fashion quote every other week that speaks to me.  So, I tuck it away in my 'fashion quote folder' for .... a rainy day.  Wouldn't you know it, the last day of NY fashion week, NYC was soaking wet. And quite frankly, it was beautiful, the streets extra shiny, the traffic making that loud swish, and the umbrellas bobbing and weaving up and down 8th Ave, .... a really beautiful improv piece. To be fair, I was on the way to a fashion show, so I had on rose colored glasses.   There's nothing like the anticipation of Spring 2011 to put a girl in a good mood. But I digress. I've always wanted to use the quotes to go along with a beautiful set of fashion pics.... and I've made a few attempts at collecting high fashion pics, but.... I had an epiphany waiting for a taxi at 8th and 33rd..... Denise Fike!  I can illustrate my favorite quotes with a set of Denise Fike treasures.
