The Body Beautiful by Allegra said... Thanks for the recognition! Over the years we've made fitness into a chore, something laborious. You know the phrase "No Pain, No Gain"! We'll that was 20 years ago. But today, fitness is about the activity, it's about moving more, so why not choose something fun to do. The more fun you have, the more you'll adhere to your program.
Is anyone surprised by the Power of Madonna? For God's sake this woman gave us universally recognized lines like 'Strike a pose! Vogue!...' 'Like a virgin, touched for the very first time...' 'And I am a material girl'.
My Mother kept a watchful eye on Madonna and what she was teaching me. I'm sure her 13 year old princess fervently singing Like a Virgin, rattled her maternal instincts a little.. a lot.
But in the end, my parents (who between them have seen every movie ever made) taught me a lot about being inspired by another artist, and reinterpreting a theme, a mood, a look... through the power of Madonna.
There was the obvious comparison to Marilyn, with Material Girl, the androgynous look taken directly from Marlene Dietrich and the corseted Madonna not so subtly mimicking Horst's The Mainbocher. Years later, Christina, Britney, and (doing a little curtsy) the Lady Gaga and Gleeks all over the world have all been inspired by Madge. I'm not a Gleek ... Bless their hearts. I watch Glee while doing the dishes or folding laundry... not really into the high school drama of it all, but the singing and dancing (yes I know, that's 50% of the show) is fantastically choreographed within an inch of its life. The Power of Madonna episode is brilliant! Sue Sylvester's performance is on another level. We ALL can relate to striking a pose. I can strike a pose with the best of them, well... maybe not the best, but you feel me.
One of my favorite interpretation of the Material Girl's work is this one from the Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge.

PS: Although I'm flirtatious (like Samantha) - but in theory I think- , I have dreams of a wonderful wedding with my prince charming like every girl :D So, I have the soul of Charlotte also; interesting :))
OK I promise, this is the last Diana Ross mention, until after the concert... but I had a conversation today about why I like... love her so much. This is why, .... I sat on my bed and watched this concert on a little 13" portable TV. It was the first time I had seen a woman that looked like me, be this .... fantastic!
.... I mean yes, there are things that I could complain about. I'd give anything to pick up the phone and hear my Dad say, "Hey Kid", ... sigh.
It would be nice to live in a building where I didn't hear my neighbors argue about the trash, .... wouldn't mind having a larger fashion budget, most days I feel 10... okay 20 lbs larger than I'd like to be, .....annnnd I have more bad hair days than good hair days.
See? I'm really fantastic at the moaning and groaning... but when I really think about it.....
.... I'm fearless, because I grew up with a Dad that REALLY believed in all my crazy ideas, and that will be with me forever.
You know what I've learned from being on a budget and not a size 0? Being creative enough, to dress curves and having style, is the same thing as a multimillion dollar purse... when it comes to fashion. Wink.
So in honor of something Dad said to me all the time... Tomorrow is another day,.... this post is about what I'm looking forward to.
First, The Boss is on tour, I have tickets, and I'm going to see her at Radio City with my 'born to wear stilettos' cousin Mikee!!
****Side note: check out my Mazzoni Center post to see how you can see Diana and also contribute to a great cause. *****
Second, The Costume Institute at the Met is opening a new show titled
"American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity"... Can't wait to see the exhibit and dish about the red carpet gala hosted by Oprah Winfrey and Anna Wintour with my Fashion Family. Also, a related exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, American High Style: Fashioning a National Collection will highlight masterworks from the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection.
... speaking of Anna Wintour, SJP is on the cover of the May Issue of Vogue! The article didn't have many surprises, it was classic Sarah Jessica, 'down to earth in the most fabulous way', but the photos are dreamy. I'm really looking forward to seeing what SJP dreams up for the 2011 Halston Heritage Line. Wow! ... Now that's a gig!
.... and while we're on the subject of SJP. CARRIE BRADSHAW is back!!!! And in theaters Memorial Day Weekend! (aka as my birthday weekend!!!) Ahhh... the mysteries of the Universe, that all these fantabulous wonders land in my little backyard.
.... Ever forward, tomorrow is another day.

This collection was all about presentation, the clothes themselves were very simple, very .... 'well appointed'. It was all about big bow hair, shiny booties, glittering white tights, and theKarl Lagerfeld signature fingerless glove. Accessories! .... my raison d'etre! PLEASE watch the slide show on Style.com, you won't be disappointed.
I like to start the morning checking out a designer on Style.com. This morning, I started with Elie Saab's Spring Couture 2009 collection. I know... last years Spring Collection. If you're a regular reader of Style.com you know that there is always one or two collections that you completely miss and when you finally see it, you think, ... Wow! Where WAS I? He's created a lovely version of romanticism, using very traditional silhouettes and fabrics, ... with modern surprises in a voluminous shoulder on a skinny dress and luxe fabrics wrapped into a very casual silhouette. This year's Elie Saab Spring Couture 2010 collection followed along those lines, .... but was much more 'wearable'.
Speaking of Lovely.... The Style Shepherd received a One Lovely BlogAward from long time Follower and Blogger, Friends and Family. Thank you! I want to pass this award on to 15 fab bloggers whom I've recently stumbled upon.
I had a great time at The Accessories Council Breakfast today! I LOVE getting up early and heading up to New York, ....... especially for a fashion related event. Today's event was all about one of my favorite topics... TWITTER! Follow me? No?! Well, my user name is IBelieveInStyle... tweet me!
The guest lecturer was Shorty Award nominee Anne Goren from Izzi Bags, who had more information than I could have imagined about twitter. Thank you Anne!
The New York Dolls ---> I've been looking in my closet lately and thinking.... I have nothing to wear. The truth is, I have plenty to wear, but since the passing of Irving Penn, Mcqueen, and Malcolm McLaren, I've been craving strong silhouettes, with rocker edge. Truth be told, I could wear some variation of jeans, and cute top everyday.... It really depends on my mood. Thank God for accessories! If I'm feeling cute and demure .... pearls, ballet flats, pink blush. Everyday elegant .... mixed metal, high heeled mary janes, nude lip. Rocker chic (where my head is now) onyx and silver accessories, white tee, and smoky eyes.... not exactly spring, but fashion folk are always two seasons ahead. I'll just wear lots of white and pearl gray, then mix in lots of edgy gorgeous little things. So first, ... nail color, Sally Hansen allows you to test drive all their colors against your skin tone.... Navy Baby 560 is my choice. And the smoky eye is always a dark chocolate, navy, or slate for me, I envy the girls who can pull off a jet black kohl eye. Accessories.... Earrings, from COGnitive Creations
I like these a lot, the material and finish make these otherwise very pretty, softly shaped earrings kinda tough... and modern.

Love my fashionista family, always on the look out for something juicy. I had heard of Jak&Jil before, but never REALLY checked it out until Nicole aka Peaches hit me up on facebook with the link. I LOVE it! I have no idea how I'm going to be able to keep up with all these great sites... but you know I'm going to give it a try. Jak & Jil Check it out.
A certain fashion reality show, introduced a celebrity judge as a style icon last week, and when she appeared on the side of the 'runway', I was surprised. Really?! Her?! Of course I recognized her name, and she's a regular in Lucky Mag and Us Weekly, but.... style icon? I don't think so. I'm sure Jessica Alba is a great girl... oops! I mean the judge that shall remain nameless is a great girl, but when did she become a style icon? Maybe its a sign of the times, .... I mean, even I have more than one BFF. and every other thing is 'truly fabulous' from coffee cake to floral headbands. We all throw around a few phrases carelessly, but .... when you call someone a Style Icon, ...... please, lets be clear, I like Jessica Alba. I saw Honey, and the Fantastic Four... she was really entertaining in Dark Angel, but is she a style icon? This whole thing, has me thinking. What makes a style icon?
Who could have walked out on that runway, and inspired a texting frenzy? Actually, I did send a tweet, "When did Jessica Alba become a style icon?" *Crickets* Dead silence. I waited for one of my young fashionistas to school me... and ... nothing. Here... 'And tonight's guest judge is red carpet regular, the beautiful Jessica Alba!' See... that works. .... And the challenge was a Red Carpet Dress!
To be an icon, you almost have to have a recognizable silhouette, ... ala film icon Alfred Hitchcock, Pop icon Michael Jackson, .... Marilyn Monroe, Diana Ross, Karl Lagerfeld, The James Bond character, Charlie's Angels!!!.....
So.... when I think of real style ... for me, who do I look to. Everyone! LOL I'm going to keep it to ten... twelve people. And in no particular order, I'll be here all night.
